More sectoral reps in city council sought

An ordinance was passed on first reading yesterday seeking to add more sectoral representatives to the city council which welcomed Councilor Berino Mambo-o Sr. on Jan. 10 to represent the indigenous community.
The ordinance, billed as Local Sectoral Representation Ordinance, will implement Sec. 457 (B) of the Local Government Code and was referred to committee on rules, privileges, laws and ordinances.

Sec. 457 (B) of the Local Government Code stated that there shall be sectoral representatives from women, workers and sectors like urban poor, indigenous cultural communities, disabled persons or any other group as determined by the legislative body.
The proposal cited that there shall be one representative in the Sangguniang Panlungsod from each of the workers, women and urban poor sectors of the city who shall be elected from among the members of the accredited people's organization of each sector.

Any selected representative of each sector will chair the committee on women, committee on urban poor and committee on labor, depending on the concerned group.
The election of the representatives shall be held during a district sectoral assembly composed of all registered organizations in the said district for purposes of local sectoral representation, the proposed ordinance cited.
